Churchtown Cottage is a Grade 2 listed cottage situated in the heart of Crantock village just outside Newquay. The beach, shop and pubs are all within a stones throw & with Crantock being situated fairly centrally within the county it is an ideal base for exploring the Cornish coast & countryside.
Situated in the picturesque village of CRANTOCK. Pets are welcome and we take bookings all year round. Crantock beach is ideal for family holidays and also pet friendly, so fantastic for quiet out of season or warm summer evening walks along the shore.
Churchtown Cottage sleeps 4. The dwelling comprises of an entrance hall, living room with colour TV and video player, two bedrooms, and bathroom with basin, WC and bath / shower. On site parking is also available. The beach is a short 600 yard stroll away.
The kitchen is equipped with electric cooker, fridge, microwave and toaster. Heating is by night storage heaters and there is an immersion heater for hot water. A travel cot and high chair are also available.
Upstairs there are two bedrooms. The main bedroom has a double bed and bedroom two comprises of adult sized bunk beds. The bathroom has a btah with shower, wash basin and toilet.
The garden is south facing, suitably enclosed and equipped with patio furniture.
The full history of the cottage is not known but it is understood that it was put to many uses over its years including a schoolhouse and poorhouse. The most well known fact locally is that the building used to be a bake house for the monastery that stood on the site of the church.
Crantock is close enough to Newquay for a quick drive or taxi ride in and out, to explore the pleasant seaside town, but far enough away to enjoy the tranquillity of a small coastal village.
Shops
Crantock Stores - distance 5 minute walk.
There is one small general store/newsagents/post office in the village. Alternatively, Morrisons have a large supermarket on the outskirts of Newquay about 3 miles away. Crantock also hosts a small number of art / craft / gift shops and galleries.
Beaches
The Beautiful Crantock Beach is ideal for surfers, bathers, walkers or just sunbathers. The warm water of the Gannel at low tide is popular with children. Swimming in the Gannel at any other time however can be very dangerous due to strong currents; therefore parents and adult bathers must beware. Lifeguards, who do offer advice as to where on the beach it is safe to enter the water, patrol the beach in the summer months. There is a beach cafe and also ice cream huts open during the season. During this time of year you can also cross the Gannel at Fern Pit, either over the footbridge at low tide or by ferry.
Other beaches close by worth a visit are: Porth Joke (Polly Joke to the locals) up at West Pentire. It is a long walk down, and there are no facilities once you get there, but it is worth the effort! Fistral Beach in Newquay of course most famous for surfing, is a beach for all age groups. Porth Beach on the outskirts of Newquay heading out in the Padstow direction, with parking on the beach is often a favourite with families.
Pubs
The famous thatched Old Albion and more modern Cornishman are both close by. Both serve food throughout the year and during the season entertainment is often advertised, check the boards for details while you are there.
The Bowgie Inn at West Pentire is also within walking distance via road or beach and will reward you with spectacular views across Crantock Bay when you arrive. They also serve food throughout the year. The traditional Pig Sty and Stable bar offer a more relaxing atmosphere while the large Ocean bar is kitted out with several flat screen televisions with Sky Sports/Setanta for anyone wanting to catch up perhaps with their football, rugby or cricket teams!
Other local Cornish pubs worth a visit for both meal and entertainment are The St Pirans Inn at Holywell Bay, The Smugglers Den at Trebellan (Cubert), The Miners Arms at Mithian (Cornish olde worlde pub) & The Lewinnick Lodge, Pentire Headland Newquay - for amazing views, especially at sunset.
The Church
There has been a church in the village since the twelfth century or earlier and the present building had restoration work done on it 222 years ago when a fire caused serious damage. There is an ancient stone coffin in the churchyard and if you wander around the back you can see the old village stocks. The woodcarvings inside the church are simply amazing and well worth seeing.
IF CHURCHTOWN COTTAGE IS SHOWING AS BOOKED, CHURCHGATE COTTAGE JUST NEXT DOOR MAY STILL BE AVAILABLE. CONTACT US FOR FURTHER DETAILS!!
