Carnglaze Carverns are set in six and a half acres of beautiful wooded hillside in the Loveny Valley. Carnglaze, which means 'blue-green rock pile' in Cornish, goes back long before the dinosaurs roamed the earth.
The mud which would become the slate that is Carnglaze was being laid down underneath the seas from as long ago as 500 million years. Intense pressure and folding as a result of subsequent periods of earth movements resulted in those early deposits being metamorphosed into slate.
Carnglaze was originally an open-cast quarry along the east bank of the Loveny river. About 300 years ago it was extended into the vast underground caverns visible today.
Mining stopped around the end of the 19th century, at which time the mine was managed and subsequently purchased by Capt E Pascoe. After the Second World War, his grandson, E A C Pascoe, and his family renovated the old mine working buildings into a dwelling and opened Carnglaze as a tourist attraction.
Alan's booklet on the history of Carnglaze is available in the gift and craft shop.
Carnglaze also incorporates the Rum Store, one of the caverns which has been given another unique purpose, a 400-seat concert auditorium. The slate walls and roof form a stunning backdrop for performances and because of the height and shape of the cavern the acoustics are outstanding.
During the Second World War this cavern was given a new and unique purpose, the Royal Navy chose it to store its supply of rum for the duration of the war.
