One of the best ways to explore Cornwall is on a bike. The county has a wide variety of safe tracks and trails, one of the most popular being the Camel Trail in North Cornwall, which follows the route of the old railway line between Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow. Because of this, the route is very flat and takes in several different aspects, from the wide open spaces along the banks of the River Camel estuary at Padstow, back to the busy town of Wadebridge and, if time and energy allow, on through a more wooded route to Bodmin. Bike hire is available at the three towns
The Great Flat Lode Trail is a circular multi-use trail which is popular with cyclists. Stretching 7.5 miles through the historic landscape of Carn Brea, near Redruth, it is located at the very heart of Cornwall’s old tin mining operations. The trail is almost entirely off-road except for a few road crossings, with some parts being accessible for wheelchair users. However, don’t be misled by the name of the trail which suggests it is mainly flat! Users can expect variations in difficulty going from flat surface to quite steep inclines. There is also the option of continuing to Land’s End or Bude. The trail to the north of Carn Brea has been adopted by the Cornish Way, part of the National Cycle Network. At major mine sites around the trail you’ll find very interesting information boards to give you a better insight into the area.
