Diving in Cornwall

Cornwall has always been popular with divers - but in March 2004 the county took a big step towards becoming one of the best diving venues in Europe. HMS Scylla, a Leander class frigate, was sunk in 20 metres of water in Whitsand Bay to form an artificial reef, just west of the wreck of the James Egan Layne, a torpedoed World War Two liberty ship. Divers can access the Scylla’s superstructure and all four decks. Highlights include the captain’s cabin, the bridge, galley, mess decks, living accommodation, operations room and the engine room. But without the National Marine Aquarium agreeing to purchase the vessel and manage the project, it would not have happened.
