Beaches in Looe, Liskeard and East Cornwall


PORTWRINKLE

Located just the other side of the River Tamar from Plymouth, this tranquil sandy/rocky rural beach is popular with surfers and has fantastic rock pools to explore.

Access: Portwrinkle is signposted from Torpoint.

PORTWRINKLE
 

DOWNDERRY

A long, straight beach in South-East Cornwall made up of a mixture of sand, shingle and pebbles. The beach is popular with visitors and locals and is backed by cliffs.

Access: From the A38 westbound from Plymouth take the A374 past Saltash and turn right on to the A387. After a mile and a half turn left on to the B3247 and Downderry is on the right, past Seaton. Access to the beach is down some steps from the rear of The Inn-on-the-Shore or via a boat slip to the east.

Character: sandy, shingle, rocky, cliffs.
Leisure facilities: canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, fishing.
Beach facilities: toilets, cafe, restaurant, shops, slipway, rescue equipment.
Car parking: free.

DOWNDERRY
 

KINGSAND & CAWSAND, TORPOINT

The twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand sit across the River Tamar from Plymouth, fringing the southern end of a three-mile bay. They have east-facing sand and shingle beaches sheltered by the Rame Head peninsula and offering views over Plymouth Sound. The beach is a series of moderately shelved sandy pockets between rocky outcrops. At either end of the beach the sand gives way to rocky foreshore backed by wooded slate cliffs.

Access: A374 Torpoint crossing, B3247 to Kingsand.

Character: shingle, sandy, rocky, cliffs.
Leisure facilities: windsurfing, water skiing, sailing, diving, fishing.
Beach facilities: toilets, cafe, slipway.
Car Parking: pay.
Surrounding area: villages.

KINGSAND & CAWSAND, TORPOINT
 

SEATON

A mixed sand and shingle beach in South-East Cornwall, divided by the River Seaton which flows into the sea here. The beach may be different each time you visit it because the river frequently changes its course. It is the local surfing centre, with afficionados visiting from Plymouth and further afield when conditions are right.

Access: Follow the B3427 along the coast until you reach Seaton.

Character: sandy, shingle, rocky, cliffs.
Leisure facilities: surfing, wind surfing.
Beach facilities: shop, pub, sisabled access, dog exercise area, dog-restricted area, toilets.
Car parking: pay.
Surrounding area: village, camp site, caravan park.

SEATON
 

TALLAND BAY, LOOE

Two smallish sand and stone beaches in South-East Cornwall, separated by rocks and rockpools, a small stream crosses one beach, ideal for playing dams.

Access: Follow signs to Looe the follow the coast road to Talland Bay.

Character: sandy, shingle, rocky.
Leisure facilities: walking.
Beach facilities: cafe, toilets, disabled access.
Car parking: pay.
Surrounding area: caravan park, campsite, village.
Awards: none.
