This is a delightful old-style building, built in the 17th century when the moorland and surrounding area was a busy mining centre, servicing old mining and engine houses at the rear of the inn. More ancient relics such as the megolithic tomb, Trethevy Quoit, bronze age stone circles and various prehistoric tumuli lie within easy reach.

The name commemorates Queen Victoria's golden jubilee in 1887, although the inn actually dates from the 16th century and was formerly known as The Axe. The interior has a homely, welcoming feel, with its oak-beamed ceilings, blazing winter fires, and Staffordshire figurines of the queen and her consort.
