Firework displays on Guy Fawkes night are as traditional in England as Christmas trees in Germany. The majority of people will be able to tell at least part of the story why the 5th of November is celebrated with amazing firework displays outshining easily any display that is put on for New Year.

Nowadays, Guy Fawkes Night is commonly associated with bonfires, sparklers, fireworks and hog roast. However, the origins of the celebration are based on a terrorist act in 1605 when Guy Fawkes, who was a Catholic conspirator, wanted to kill the protestant king as well as his establishment with the final goal of creating an uprising against the protestant part of society. His gunpowder plot, however ,failed and he and eight of his conspirators were found guilty of treason.

On the night of the 5th of November 1605, the people of London celebrated the failed attempt of the king’s assassination by lighting up bonfires. Later on, fireworks and the burning of an effigy have been added.

As in the rest of the country, there will be Guy Fawkes firework displays across Cornwall. I have put together five of the best bonfire events for you to enjoy. Wrap up warm, take a flask and enjoy a great Guy Fawkes night: “Remember, remember the fifth of November.”

1. Falmouth - Thursday, November 5th
The Falmouth firefighters have organised one of the biggest displays in the county. The gates of the Falmouth Cricket Club open at 6pm and the display will start at 7pm. All the proceeds of the evening will be given to local charities.

2. Pool/Redruth - Thursday, November 5th
For the fourth year running, Heartlands in Pool will be putting on a firework display. Entry is free due to the fact that the event is sponsored by local businesses making it one of the most attended Guy Fawkes events in Cornwall. The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm and the firework will start at 7.30pm.

3. Godrevy/Hayle - Thursday, November 5th
If you are looking for an amazing setting to enjoy some fireworks then Godrevy beach is as good as it is going to get. The Rockpool which is the local bar is organising the ‘Fireworks on the Rocks’ event. It kicks off with a BBQ at 6.30pm followed by the flaming of the bonfire at 7pm and fireworks at 8pm. The team will also provide mulled wine and cider to keep the spirits up during a cold November evening. Entry is free but donations for the RNLI are welcomed.

4. Helston - Wednesday, October, 28th
Over half term, Flambards in Helston will put on a daily 15 minute firework display. On top of the daily Guy Fawkes celebrations, visitors can also take part in a spooky pumpkin trail in the creepy Victorian village and enjoy the rides, exhibitions and entertainment that are usually available at Flambards.

5. Truro - November, 5th
Tremorvah Playing Fields Group, in association with Truro City Council is holding their annual bonfire and fireworks display on Thursday 5th November from 5pm to 7pm. The event will raise money for Cornwall Air Ambulance and Penhaligon’s Friends. Gates open at 5pm with the fire lit just before 6pm and fireworks set off at 6.45pm.

Guy Fawkes Nacht

Das Erleben von unglaublichem Feuerwerk in der Guy Fawkes ist so traditionell in England wie der Weihnachtsbaum in Deutschland. Die Mehrheit der Leute werden Ihnen wenigstens ein bisschen von der Geschichte der Guy Fawkes Nacht berichten können, die dazu geführt hat, dass man in England am 5. November mit einem ausgiebigen Feuerwerk feiert. Dieses Feuerwerk ist bei weitem beeindruckender als das was an Silvester geboten wird.

Heutzutage ist die Guy Fawkes Nacht bekannt für Lagerfeuer, Wunderkerzen, Feuerwerk und Schweinebraten. Der Grund der Feierlichkeiten beruht aber auf einem terroristischen Attentat, das im Jahr 1605 durchgeführt werden sollte. Guy Fawkes, ein katholischer Verschwörer, wollte den protestantischen König und mit ihm die gesamte Regierung umbringen. Dies sollte dann zu einem katholischen Aufstand gegen die mehrheitlich protestantische Gesellschaft führen. Sein Schießpulver-Attentat ging aber schief und am Ende wurden er und acht weitere Verräter wegen Staatsverrat hingerichtet.

Am Abend des 5. November 1605 feierten die Einwohner Londons den fehlgeschlagenen Mordversuch und entzündeten zahlreiche Lagerfeuer. Später kam das Feuerwerk und das Verbrennen von Strohpuppen hinzu.

Genau wie in den anderen Teilen Englands wird auch in Cornwall Guy Fawkes mit vielen verschiedenen Feuerwerken gefeiert. Ich habe die fünf besten Veranstaltungen für Sie herausgesucht. Ziehen Sie sich also warm an, nehmen Sie sich Ihre Thermosflasche mit und genießen Sie die Guy Fawkes Nacht: “Remember, remember the fifth of November.”

1. Falmouth - Donnerstag, 5. November
Die Feuerwehr in Falmouth richtet eine der größten Guy Fawkes Veranstaltungen in Cornwall aus. Das Feuerwerk findet im Falmouth Cricket Club statt und Einlass ist um 18 Uhr. Die gesamten Einnahmen werden an ansässige Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen gespendet.

2. Pool/Redruth - Donnerstag, 5. November
Zum vierten Mal findet das Feuerwerk in Hearlands in Pool statt. Einlass ist frei, da viele örtliche Unternehmen das Ereignis finanziell unterstützen. Es ist daher eine der meist besuchten Veranstaltungen in Cornwall. Das Lagerfeuer wird um 18.30 Uhr angezündet, gefolgt vom Feuerwerk um 19.30 Uhr.

3. Godrevy/Hayle - Donnerstag, 5. November
Falls Sie das Feuerwerk direkt an der Küste erleben möchten, dann sollten Sie sich Godrevy Strand vormerken. Die Rockpool bar organisiert das ‘Fireworks on the Rocks’ Event. Die Veranstaltung beginnt mit einem herzhaften BBQ um 18.30 Uhr, gefolgt vom Lagerfeuer um 19 Uhr und dem Feuerwerk um 20 Uhr. Das Team verteilt auch Glühwein und warmen Cider an die Gäste, so dass niemandem kalt werden sollte. Einlass ist frei. Spenden werden aber begrüßt und gehen alle an die RNLI.

4. Helston - Mittwoch, 28. Oktober
Während der Ferien können sich Besucher von Flambards in Helston täglich auf ein 15-minutiges Feuerwerk freuen. Zusätzlich zu den Guy Fawkes Feierlichkeiten können Besucher sich auch auf den gespenstischen Kürbiswanderweg machen und das gruselige viktorianische Dorf erkunden.

5. Truro - Donnerstag, 5. November
Die Tremorvah Playing Fields Gruppe in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt Truro hat das alljährliche Guy Fawkes Lagerfeuer und Feuerwerk organisiert, welche am 5. November zwischen 17Uhr und 19Uhr angezündet werden. Die Veranstaltung sammelt Geld für die Cornwall Air Ambulance und Penhaligon’s Friends. Einlass ist um 17 Uhr.
