Photography exhibition: People of the Rainforest - Eden Project

The photographs were taken in the Amazon, Sumatra, Borneo and Malaysia and are installed in the corresponding areas of our Rainforest Biome. The pictures have been specially selected to remind visitors to Eden that an estimated 200 million indigenous people around the world depend on forests for their home and livelihood.

The exhibition was prompted by a letter from Eden Project co-founder Sir Tim Smit to Robin suggesting that the themes of people and forests were drawn together at Eden. Eden has worked with Survival International, the global movement for tribal people’s rights, to bring the exhibition to Cornwall. Survival International was founded 45 years ago by a group including Robin. They were appalled by what was being done to the indigenous tribes of Brazil by the government agency responsible for caring for them. (Photograph on left: Awa by Sebastião Salgado)

About the Photographers

Robin Hanbury-Tenison OBE, DL is the doyen of British explorers and a Founder and President of SurvivalInternational. Conservationist, broadcaster, film-maker, author of more than 20 books, lecturer, campaigner and farmer, he is one of the few remaining British explorers who merits the name.

Sebastião Salgado is the world-famous Brazilian photographer whose pictures have appeared in numerous exhibitions and books. In 1994, he and his wife Lélia Wanick Salgado formed their own photo agency called Amazonas Images, which works on long term social documentary projects. The photographs are incorporated into the foliage in the Rainforest Biome. (Photograph on right: Penan with blowpipe, Borneo by Robin Hanbury-Tenison)
