This month’s cover illustrates the article by David Chapman, we have featured this month, taking a closer look at the debate over how to control Bovine TB.
David is a renowned wildlife photographer, and we asked him how he went about winning the trust of the badgers to capture this shot:
“I wanted a photo of a badger entering its sett but to avoid disturbing the badgers I decided to make a hole to look like a sett entrance and feed the badgers close by,” David explains. ”I put my camera on the ground pointing out through the hole with a wide angle lens and took the photo using a remote release. To light the scene I used three flashguns; one from inside the hole and two from behind.”
In another image which features in the article, David caught a badger reflected in still water.
“For this image, I attracted a family of badgers to feed on peanuts in an area close to a small woodland pool. One of them
would regularly go to the pool to have a drink. The photo was taken in the evening and I used three flashguns to light the scene: one on each side of the camera and the third behind the badger to add a little back-lighting. I was lying down at the edge of the water to take the photo with my camera just above the water’s surface.”
