Christine Foulds tells us why an evening with the Kneehigh Asylum touring theatre group is a not to be missed this September.
I was first introduced to the Kneehigh Asylum theatre group two years ago. In the beginning, I was not too sure whether I even wanted to go, because some might say I do not appreciate the performing arts and art in general as much as I should do. Looking back at it now, fortunately I was not able to decline the tickets as it was a family affair.
The play that I went to see was called ‘Steptoe & Son’ in 2012. Some of you might know it because it is based on a 1970’s sitcom about a father and son working and living together on a scrap yard. I had never heard of it before, so I did not know what to expect. I have to admit some of the humour went straight over my head but I thoroughly enjoyed the play primarily because of the enthusiasm of the actors and the audience. On top of that I just fell in love with the whole ethos that the Asylum stands for.
Going to see a play at Kneehigh’s Asylum is not just about what happens on the stage but about the location, the food and the people who come to see the performance. There is something really magical about having a picnic with your friends and family before the start of the show, enjoying a beautiful late summer sunset and then eagerly anticipating the start of the play. At least, that is what my experience was like in 2012.
In 2013 the Asylum did not produce a play for the September slot. This year, however, they are back and they could not have found a more beautiful setting for their latest production of ‘Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs)’ which takes centre stage at the Lost Gardens of Heligan near Mevagissey.
The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a Cornish treasure and the gardens on their own are reason enough to visit. Now they are hosting the Asylum for the second time in four years from the 30th of August to the 28th of September. This is a real treat as visitors who come the see the play will not only experience some fine acting but also are able to explore and discover the rich history of the Lost Gardens.
The Asylum would not be as popular as it is without one more essential ingredient: food. Two years ago Archie Brown, an organic health food shop and café from Penzance, provided some mouthwatering dishes. This year, food lovers among the audience can look forward to the ‘Taste of Heligan’. This home-made two course menu has been specially created for the event and in the spirit of the Asylum will consist of locally sourced meat and vegetables.
I am aware that I have not talked about the play itself but rather shone a light on everything else but the play. This is not to say that I don’t believe that the performance plays an essential part of the overall success but rather that there are writers out there who are much more qualified than I am to express their views on this matter. My aim was rather to portray the magic of the evening because after all that is what Kneehigh’s Asylum stands for - Magic.

Das Kneehigh Asylum - Lass den Zauber beginnen
Christine Foulds stellt Ihnen die “Kneehigh Asylumn“-Theatergruppe vor und erklärt, warum mit ihnen ein Abend im September ein unvergessliches Ereignis sein wird.
Vor ungefähr zwei Jahren betrat ich das erste Mal das Zelt der Thatergruppe “Kneehigh Asylum“. Anfangs war ich mir nicht sicher, ob ich überhaupt einen Besuch wagen sollte. Freunde und Familie sagen mir gerne nach, dass ich den darstellenden Künsten sowie der Kunst im Allgemeinen nicht genügend Respekt zolle. Glücklicherweise konnte ich die Karten nicht zurückgeben und erlebte so einen unvergesslichen Abend im “Asylum“.
Wir sahen uns ein Stück namens ‘Steptoe & Son’ an, welches auf einer englischen Sitcom aus den siebziger Jahren basierte. Die Geschichte war mir unbekannt, daher wusste ich auch nicht, was mich erwartete. Trotzdem ich, um ehrlich zu sein, einige Anekdoten und Sketche nicht verstand, war ich wie in den Bann gezogen, was wohl in erster Linie an der magischen Atmosphäre des “Asylums“ lag.
Wenn man sich ein Theaterstück mit “Kneehigh Asylum“ anschaut, dann geht es eigentlich nicht hauptsächlich um das Schauspiel selbst, sondern mehr um den Austragungsort, das Essen und die begeisterten Zuschauer. Es geschieht etwas wirklich Magisches, wenn man mit Freunden und Familie vor dem Einlass ein Picknick genießt, sich einen wunderschönen, spätsommerlichen Sonnenuntergang anschaut und dann den Beginn des Stückes voller Vorfreude herbeisehnt. So lässt sich jedenfalls meine Erfahrung aus dem Jahr 2012 beschreiben.
Während das “Asylum“ 2013 kein Theaterstueck in Cornwall produzierte, sind sie dieses Jahr wieder da und hätten für die Dreigroschenoper ‘Dead Dog in a Suitcase (and other love songs)’ keinen besseren Austragungsort wählen können: die Lost Gardens of Heligan, in der Nähe von Mevagissey.
Die Lost Gardens of Heligan allein sind schon einen Besuch wert. Zudem sind sie nun zum zweiten Mal in vier Jahren der Veranstaltungsort für das “Asylum“. Dies ist etwas ganz Besonderes, da Besucher nicht nur in den Genuss kommen sich das Theaterstück vor einer unglaublichen Kulisse anzuschauen sondern sie erhalten auch die Möglichkeit die reichhaltige Geschichte der Lost Gardens of Heligan zu erleben und zu entdecken.
Das “Asylum“ würde sich nicht einer so großen Beliebtheit erfreuen, wenn ein bedeutsames
Detail fehlen würde: köstliches Essen hergestellt aus Zutaten biologischen Anbaus. Vor zwei Jahren stellte das Bio und Öko-Café “Archie Brown“ aus Penzance deliziöse Gerichte zur Verfügung. Dieses Jahr können sich die Gäste auf den Geschmack der Heligans freuen. Das Menü besteht aus zwei Gerichten, die exklusiv für die “Asylum“- Besucher kreiert wurden.
Ich bin mir bewusst, dass ich über das Stück selbst kaum ein Wort verloren habe und ich Ihnen alles, außer das Thaterstück beschreibe. Es liegt nicht daran, dass ich nicht glaube, dass die Qualität der Aufführung nicht essenziell für den Erfolg vom “Asylum“ ist sondern eher daran, dass es hocherfahrene Kritiker gibt, die weit qualifizierter sind als ich sich zu diesem Stück zu äußern. Mein Ziel war es Ihnen von einem magischen Abend zu erzählen, weil dies am Ende das ist wofür das “Asylum“ steht: Magie.
